You are informed that a meeting of this Chamber was unanimously of the opinion that, inasmuch as the Japanese postal service has hitherto given entire satisfaction to the Community, there can be no objection to the discontinuance of the British Postal Agency, provided that the foreign department of the Japanese Post Office continues, as heretofore, to be under the charge of a competent European and the existing scale of postages is maintained.
You do not furnish me with particulars of certain proposals to which the Postmaster General alludes in connection with the suggested transfer, and I conclude, therefore, that with respect to these, the opinion of the Chamber is not sought. Under this impression, I have not invited discussion upon any of the points raised in the 2nd paragraph of Mr. Lister's letter.
I have, etc.,
(Signed) H. St. J. Browne, Chairman.
